Dendera Temple complex ( Part 6 ) , The Meanings and Definitions

  • Propylon ( noun ) : The porch , vestibule , or entrance of an edifice . And that serves as the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens . In ancient Egyptian architecture, a monumental gateway, usually between two towers in outline like truncated pyramids, of which one or a series stood before the actual entrance or pylon of most temples or other important buildings .
  • The Ennead ( noun ) : A group or set of nine . In Greek meaning a collection of nine things . The Ennead was a group of nine deities in Egyptian mythology and were worshipped at Heliopolis and consisted and merged of the god Atum and Ra , his children Shu and Tefnut , their children Geb and Nut and their children Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys .
  • The Ba : The symbol Ba is used to denote the personality of someone . As per Egyptian beliefs , Ba leaves the body when a person dies . It returns to the tomb of a deceased person every night . The Egyptians used mummies and statues to house the Ba which returns at night , where The Ancient Egyptians believed that a human soul was made up of five parts : The Ren ( name ) , The Ba ( soul ) , The Ka ( spirit or conscience ) , The Sheut ( shadow ) , and The Ib or Jb ( heart ) . OR an aspect of the soul, represented as a human-headed bird .
  • The apotropaic ( adjective ) : Intended to ward off evil OR designed to avert evil OR having the power to prevent evil or bad luck OR averting evil OR preventing or intended to prevent evil .
  • The mammisi : A birth house / Term used for a small chapel attached to a larger temple , and associated with the nativity of a god . The word is derived from Coptic . Its usage is attributed to Jean François Champollion . The most important surviving examples are from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods in Egypt / An independent religious building usually associated with the larger cult temples of the Late Period ( Graeco-Roman ) of Egypt .
  • The Iseum : A sanctuary or temple for the worshippers of the Greco-Roman god Isis .
  • Abaci : Architecture . a slab forming the top of the capital of a column OR a tablet placed horizontally on top of the capital of a column as an aid in supporting the architrave .
